Whispering Stones: Unearthing the Legacy of Indian Mound Park

Originally preserved in 1926 and formally dedicated as a city park in the late 1950s, this mound is the lone survivor among the 20–50 similar Tequesta burial sites that once dotted Broward County. Excavations in the 1930s by John Mann Goggin unearthed a 700‑year‑old wooden figure affectionately named the “Keeper of the Mound”. Further digs revealed pottery, shell tools, and human remains—many now held by the Smithsonian and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Today, Indian Mound Park spans just 1 acre, but it offers much more than historical intrigue. Manicured green lawns, native shade trees, and interpretive plaques create a space of quiet reflection. Benches offer scenic vantage points overlooking Lake Santa Barbara and the Intracoastal, while a nearby water taxi stop adds charm and ease of access.

The park also serves as a dog-friendly community retreat, where locals walk their pets, enjoy picnics, or simply soak in the peaceful atmosphere. Conceived through the generous donation of the Jelks family and reinforced by city’s dedication in 1958, the park remains a testament to early historic preservation efforts in Florida.

In 2014, the mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places, underscoring its cultural and archaeological significance. More than just a green space, it is a fragile link to the region’s earliest inhabitants—the Tequesta—and a living classroom for the study of history, archaeology, and native landscapes.
